Bembidion palosverdes Kavanaugh & Erwin, 1992:312

Palos Verdes intertidal minute carabid beetle

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

"we resurrect the subgenus Lymneops Casey to accommodate B. palosverdes and B. laticeps"

(Maddison & Maruyama, 2019)

"This species was transferred from the subgenus Cillenus Samouelle, 1819 to the subgenus Lymneops Casey, 1918 by Maddison & Maruyama (2019)."

(Gimmel et al., 2023)

Conservation Status

Last record: June 1964

Rediscovered in 2010 (Caterino et al., 2015)

The Palos Verdes intertidal minute carabid beetle (Bembidion palosverdes) was described by (Kavanaugh & Erwin, 1992) based upon 6 specimens (4 males; 2 females) collected in 1964 from the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The species had not been collected since, and they hypothesised that oil spills caused the species' extinction. However, it was rediscovered in 2010 on Santa Catalina in the Channel Islands (Caterino et al., 2015; Maddison & Maruyama, 2019). The original Palos Verdes Peninsula population is thought to have been lost (Caterino et al., 2015; Gimmel et al., 2023).
