Pachnodus velutinus Pfeiffer, 1868

Velutine pachnodus (proposed)

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Synonym/s: Pachnodus velutinus Pfeiffer, 1841 (incorrect year)

Conservation Status

Extinct?

Last record: between 1972 and 1994

IUCN RedList status: Extinct

Hybridization with P. niger, following its expansion into P. velutinus habitat is believed to have caused the extinction of pure individuals of the latter species (Gerlach, 2009). No individuals have been recorded since before 1994. Yet a new preprint questions both the conservation status of the species (suggesting that the species is probably extant) and the cause of the decline (Altaba, 2022).

Distribution
