Cathedra grandiflora Loes. (1889:75)

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Conservation Status

Last record: 20 November 1888 (Lucena et al., 2021a:46-47)

Rediscovered or Extant (see below)

This species was treated as possibly extinct by (Sleumer, 1984 fide Lucena et al., 2021a:45), potentially due to a lack of herbarium specimens (since the type collection?) (Lucena et al., 2021a:45). More recently, it has been listed as globally extinct by multiple international authorities without any clear evidence presented (Humphreys et al., 2019; Albani Rocchetti et al., 2022; POWO, 2024). However, Brazilian workers have recorded the species on a number of occasions since 23 March 1999 (Lucena et al., 2021a:45-46), demonstrating that the species is extant. The question is whether this constitutes the species' rediscovery or not, which partly depends on Sleumer's (1984) unstated justification for treating the species as possible extinct in the first place.
